Cotton Candy Facts

Cotton candy was originally called Fairy Floss and was invented by Dr. William Morrison, a dentist, in 1897. It was first introduced to the public at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, Missouri. In the UK it's called Candy Floss and in France it's called Barbe À Papa (Daddy's Beard).

This beloved spun sugar confection is made by heating sugar until it reaches a temperature of between 260°F and 350°F. The sugar is liquified and then spun at a high rate of speed, exiting the spinning head through tiny holes. The fine threads cool instantly, creating the light, airy treat we all know and love. Those delicate strands are actually finer than a human hair.

Today, artisan makers like Brian's Gourmet are reimagining this classic fairground staple — crafting small-batch, gourmet versions using organic ingredients and natural flavors, free from artificial dyes and preservatives. What started as a carnival novelty has become a canvas for real culinary creativity. From nostalgic flavors to unexpected combinations, the humble spun sugar treat has never tasted so good.

Ingredients: organic cane sugar and flavor (organic dextrose and natural flavors). Unlike many other manufacturers we do not use any artificial ingredients, preservatives or dyes. We would never use an artificial color and we found that even plant-based colors can impart an unpleasant taste and stain clothing. Since our cotton candy is all natural, so is the color. All flavors will have an off-white color.

That is a great question! We use only organic cane sugar, which is less processed than conventional white sugar. Because it isn't fully refined, a small amount of natural molasses stays on the crystals, giving the sugar its warm golden or off-white color. Conventional white sugar goes through additional refining steps that remove all the molasses, resulting in a bright white appearance.
